I am not sure why, but I have always been an anti-starbucks guy. Perhaps it is the ridiculously overpriced bad tasting coffee? Oh no, it is the free wifi...oh wait, no they charge for wifi...that is why I go to panera to work all the time. ...so the reason for my post...this entertained me... And reason number 3, look at all the hyper-snob-ites that are just so displaced by the inconvience of someone bringing their own desktop pc into a bucks... I laughed, maybe you will too: Sunday, February 24, 2008
Fem just put the girls to bed, I just finished cleaning the kitchen after dinner, and then I cleaned the tornado zone in the family room. Someone whack me over the head to make sure I am seeing things correctly... SOMEONE updated his blog! ----> http://www.hyper-jump.com So my pops called a while back and asked me about the Eeepc from Asus. He was looking at one over at MicroCenter and was curious what I thought. Would be a perfect machine for him and Mom, but an even more perfect machine for ME (well, the girls). If I keep reading good reviews like this, I am going to consider one. The ultra portability is rediculous. I could use this for all of my presos and not lug a massive brick as I do today. http://www.december.com/john/info/eeepc.html Nothing releives stress like silly, fully throttle out of control sliding. Took the Fem and Minifems to Disney's Princess on Ice yesterday. Both the girls loved it...always fun to see the magic in their eyes at an event like this. Saturday, February 23, 2008
So I was sent to the grocery store today with a list of things we needed... ...and of course came home with the latest edition of Road RacerX. That tipped me off to Nicky Hayden's Kentucky Kid special that MTV put on...go check them all out...9 videos in all. Very cool though, get to see some more the hayden life than you see or read about. http://www.mtv.com/overdrive/?id=1573916&vid=189081 **Update...** half way through the videos, and this is one of the most entertaining videos I have seen. "Cupcake electicive claaassss". "Shamppppoooo???? Shampppppoooo but alsooooo need conditioneerr?"

It is Friday night, not too much going on. Just having a few drinks, checking up on some flickr accounts, and just tweaking my aging windows mobile 5 phone. Just noticed that Google finally released Google maps for WM5, so I just installed and am playing a bit with it... As you can tell...no GPS integration for the Q. It is pretty amazing though...just how much we can do from phones these days. Now, this is no iPhone interface, but the satellite images actually come in pretty well. Phones are not what they used to be... Here is a satellite shot of our place from the Q: Wednesday, February 20, 2008
Updated some photos in my flickr account... .... sort of a year in our life in 100mb or less... http://flickr.com/photos/8094653@N06/ I have been buried in RFP response hell, and final proposal hell the last 5 days. This past three day weekend was not really three days off for as much as I worked...but in the end, I met my deadlines, with a good work product that I am proud of, and that is all I can ask for at this point. So, I take full credit for hazing someone to update their blog. Sadly, it took a phone call to make it happen... http://www.oldlefthander.com And then, the uber-super-star-photo-guy has updated his blog (FINALLY!!)....he shames me. I need to shoot more, I just dont make the time. http://www.kosinedesign.com/photoblog/ And then, one of these kids is doing his own thing by traveling the world for his job and neglecting his blog: http://www.hyper-jump.com Monday, February 18, 2008
Decided to increase some of the backups I have on Mozy...up'd another 19GB (this just photos...) So, my itunes library is up, my most important digi photos are up...off-sites are completed: ![]() For almost a decade, I was managing enterprise messaging environments for companies like Qwest, Dow Chemical and BellSouth. I have become the antithasis of the users I used to support. I run Outlook 2007 on a daily basis, we leverage an archiving solution (one that we wrote and sell), yet I **shudder** still have over a 2GB email mailbox...for work. That is obsurd. When running Outlook, my poor machine is crawling...and since we run in cached mode, the sheer amount of data that I am synching is rediculous. So, back to my roots...I decided to check my mailbox size. I am both saddened and embarrassed...I have becomed that user, the one with gigs of email, and what for? *sigh* there should be some light at the end of the tunnel...it is either a patch, or the delete key: ![]() Sunday, February 17, 2008
Another great weekend of home improvement...tomorrow is another day off, but I will be working a good amount (professionally) for some up coming deadlines at the office. Yesterday Dad stopped over for the day, and we ran 5 new outlets, wired up a switch for the overheads, then we installed the acoustical tiles in the wall. The goal is to minimize noise in Minifem2's new bedroom, since afterall she is such a light sleeper. Amazingly enough, they seem to work, and will keep out noise that simple insulation would not. You can see some of the tiles installed in the shots below. Today, I was able to drywall the entire room, as well as install the three new can lights in the ceiling. The room is quickly coming together: Saturday, February 16, 2008

Now this is impressive...it makes me want to pick up mountain biking all over again...sadly, no trails like this around here! Rather funny video of a take off gone wrong...why were they standing there?? RC Jet Hilariously Bad Take Off - Watch more free videos Monday, February 11, 2008
Some days throw you some curves, today was one of those days. Started off with something like -2 wind chill, and then on my commute to the office realized that the car was 'overheating' and well, she died on me. In traffic, dead on the road. Some how or another, I coaxed her all the way home...but the car was ill. Came home, grabbed the fem's Pathfinder and then hit the road to make my 8:15 meeting. Fem took care of everything, had it flatbed'ed to MAG, and they were able to quickly diagnose it to a faulty thermostat. Since the computer thought the car was overheating, the computer would shut it off at any safe moment it felt necessary...it was an interesting ride back to the house for sure. The good news is that we were able to pick it back up tonight at 7pm, and all is well...just we are about 7 bills lighter (faulty thermostat, leaking powersteering line, and service interval)....would have done the work myself...had it not been so cold. So after coming home from MAG, pulling in the drive, I see our owl. First time I could catch him on 'film' (from my Q's camera)...very pretty bird, and rediculously large wing span. Seen him a few times, finally have proof he exists: ![]() Sunday, February 10, 2008
Since the room upstairs is finished, thought I would post up some shots of the work leading up to now: The wall framed and up: All drywalled and ready for tape and mud: And the finished product, drywalled, painted, woodwork all trimmed out, new fan/light: Thought I would toss up a quick flickr describing the recently furnished home office...more to come as we continue the build... TOO Funny! In posting my quick birdseye cam, Youtube tossed up some parallel interest videos...check out the one of Majitek...protecting you from incoming ninjas...and what is with the frogs in the background?? Are they serious? The interface looks legit...yet, the video cracks me up....nice boots: Was just reviewing some of the IP camera motion detection archives, and thought I would post up a quick example of the output from the birdseye CAM watching the drive...not really sure why, just thought I would...since...I could. This is what I get emailed when motion is detected from the birdseye... Long day yesterday. Started the morning at 7:00, some quick email, then a breakfast meeting at First Watch...then a lunch meeting in Dublin...then email, configs, proposals...5pm found me at the City Club at Hoover Reservoir for a poker night with some very cool customers. We thought it woud be fun to get away and have some brew, play for some $ and just relax. We shut down around 1:30 and I was home by 2...but was hurting today. I walked out a $100 light, after being up $300+.... Fast forward to today. 2:15 am, I am in bed. 7:00 am, minifem wakes me (we try to let mom sleep in on the weekends) and we grab minifem2 on the way down. Start up some early morning shows, milk and breakfast in hand, they each have their own couch to enjoy a movie...and I go back to sleep on a couch with the little one. Then at 11 am Fembot wakes me.... I HATE that...such a slug for me to sleep till 11... So, I quickly down a gallon of coffee, suck up the tiredness and start the day. Got a good bit done: - New ceiling fan installed in MiniFem2's new room...good amount of attic time required to build the bracing needed. It looks good, nice fan and nice modern lights on it too. - New ceiling fan installed in MiniFem1's room. Same as MiniFem 2's...install took 10 minutes after I knew what to do from the first. - Replaced light in girls bathroon, new nickel light installed - Replaced the 2 lights in upstairs hallway, new nickel lights installed - Reached my limit after a year and half of having no office. So from the time of the previous post today, till about 2 hours ago...I have an office: - Reassembled and had to build (almost entirely) new desk from parts. Nice desk, but you know how this furniture is, never meant to be moved...and the movers when we moved in tossed it off the 6 ft rear deck of their truck. Alas, I resurect the desk for a few more years of use. - Dissassembled my PC from the upstairs 'closet'. Bring the 22" widescreen, pc, periphs, external USB SATA drives, UPS, etc...all down. What a PAIN. Hate moving equipment...nothing ever works as it did before. My casualty today is my iscsi 'nas' device....not happy about that one at all...it has all of our pictures on it. Now I grab a brew and start to fix... - Then, modified the girls small desk, and built them a bigger one. Moved them to the corner of the first floor office. - Moved Fems desk to the other wall, re-setup her laptop and all her bits. Three desks, three pc's, 1 office...and we are not crowded. And here are the shots: Fems Desk: My desk along with the girls: The girls live here...they are on the PC so much and we think that has everything to do with the 2 year old knowing her letters and starting to spell. She is so funny...ask her to show you something on the web and bam! She is there...hundreds of games between Noggin, Sprout and PBS...and she can tell you where the game is and how to get there. I took some spare parts that I busted when reassmbling my desk, married it to theirs, and now, they have more room. In time, I want to replace the heavy monitor with a small LCD...hell, I have two dead 20" LCDS downstairs....IF ONLY THEY WORKED! Sceptre PC LCDs only seem to last 5 years....and they cost a fortune when I bought them. As you can see above, I am only down to 1 22" widescreen these days. It seems to work pretty well though for a 5ms display. Both of the girls were in bed tonight when I finished their desk, I think they will be happy. I even loaded ObjectDock on their XP machine to give them an easier way to navigate: Ok, this guy makes me feel like a slug. After almost a year and a half in a tiny closet with barely enough room for a keyboard, monitor AND mouse...I come across this. Reminds me of the days when I had a small home office: http://www.stefandidak.com/office/ ![]() Wednesday, February 06, 2008
Our word of the day.... blog Post up boys...looks like Chaz and I are the only ones with active net connections? ;-) Tuesday, February 05, 2008
So, some are buying the Mac's, and well....then there is me. Fired up Tiger in my home Vmware instance...yep, it sucks. But, it worked...this ancient machine was never meant to backup terabytes of data via Mozy, run Vmware server, all while bloating an XP install, and doing other meaningless tasks.. ![]() ![]() If you happen to be a new Mac user, this ad may be of some use... If you are a gamer, this ad may be of some use... And then the classic: I .... just .... can't stop .... And then... I ... tears.... I swear... It is down right amazing how this site acts as a market influence and purchasing engine for those readers of the project. Shortly after my post below on the Mac Airbook, readers quickly went out to buy a Mac of their own. See, this hella cool guy did. BTW, congrats on the news! In all seriousness, it is just the bitter jealous must conform to the man PC life I live that has me all flustered. :) In my time at my new position, I have seen two guys carrying the Mac's, and they have the perfect setup....fully Vmware fusion-on-ified and they P to V'd their corporate XP image...they comply by running the corporate image, but BAM, they are the over to OS X to use that as well. Pretty slick, sadly, I am not in the disposable income range (nor likely ever to be) for me to purchase one for my own use...but they are damn nice. Good choice Chazbot... Saturday, February 02, 2008
After a new firmware upgrade, the security DVR finally has the configuration that works as needed...just needed to place a call to the company to get the firmware... Full motion detection and recording...working very well. I have finally decided on the hardwired cameras to attach to the Security DVR, and I have the Cisco IP camera also integrated. The Cisco is in the "birds eye view", and emails my smart phone on motion detection for those coming up the driveway. From my PC, I can see the major 5 cams...check below: ![]() |
